Michael New

After researching freshwater prawn culture in the UK and North America from 1969, Michael New co-managed an UNDP/FAO project (1979-1981) which expanded freshwater prawn farming in Thailand. His subsequent career included becoming Senior Aquaculturist in the Aquaculture Development and Coordination Programme (ADCP) in Rome; Programme Coordinator of the ASEAN-EEC Aquaculture Development and Coordination Programme (AADCP) based in Bangkok; and an FAO Senior Fishery Resources Officer (Aquaculture) based in Rome. Michael New has worked in over 40 countries and his name became synonymous with freshwater prawn farming after his authorship of FAO’s first technical manual on this topic. He has authored nearly 150 technical manuals, scientific papers, and popular articles on aquaculture; was chair, keynote/plenary speaker or organiser of aquaculture conferences in Australia, Bali, Brazil, India, South Korea, Thailand and several European and North American countries; and formed the NGO Aquaculture without Frontiers. He has been President of the World Aquaculture and European Aquaculture Societies. In 1999 he was decorated by Queen Elizabeth II for his services to aquaculture in developing countries. His association with GIANT PRAWN Conferences is recorded elsewhere in this document.
